JetBlue Soars 10% as Spirit Airlines Nears Collapse
JetBlue Airways (JBLU) surged as much as 10.9% Friday following reports that Spirit Airlines is preparing to cease operations. Frontier Airlines (ULCC) also gained 8.8%, with both carriers positioned to absorb market share from Spirit's potential exit.
The rally came after The Wall Street Journal reported Spirit's government rescue deal collapsed amid bondholder opposition. JetBlue had previously failed to acquire Spirit due to regulatory blocks, leaving the ultra-low-cost carrier with mounting debt and weakening demand in its core market segment.
Susquehanna raised JetBlue's price target to $5.00 despite maintaining a neutral rating. The airline recently posted disappointing quarterly results with an EPS of -$0.87 versus -$0.72 consensus estimates.
